Breast augmentation is a serious procedure, so without question, there is some level of discomfort involved in the recovery process. However, the pain should never be unbearable. Even so, there are many measures you can take to keep yourself more comfortable during the recovery process; learn about some of them here.
Maintain Support
Ensure your breasts are supported at all times. Without the appropriate support, the weight of your breasts will strain the muscles and tissue around the breast, which can lead to discomfort. A lack of support during the early phase of recovery can even cause the area to not heal correctly. Ensure you keep your breasts covered with a surgical bandage or bra during recovery. In fact, you will likely be required to keep your breasts covered at all times for a period after the procedure.
Avoid Tobacco
Make a commitment to avoid tobacco even before you have the procedure performed. Tobacco use alters the way blood is able to flow through your body. However, blood needs to freely flow to the breasts in order to activate the healing process. The more you smoke, the more you delay your body's ability to heal itself, which will lead to prolonged discomfort. Additionally, if you currently use tobacco products, make sure you speak with the surgeon about your use beforehand.
Eat Well
Be mindful of the foods you eat if you want to have the best recovery process possible. Ideally, a low-sodium diet limited to fruits, vegetables, and lean meats is best. High-sodium foods increase fluid retention. Extra fluid buildup around your breasts will cause more swelling, which will ultimately lead to greater discomfort. If you have high blood pressure or issues with fluid retention, eating a high-sodium diet can only make matters worse.
Sleep Correctly
Find the right way to sleep during recovery to maximize your comfort. While it's a given that you cannot sleep on your stomach post-operation, it also does not mean that you should rest flat on your back. In a flat position, you actually put more pressure on your breasts. The more comfortable option would be to rest on your back at an angle, propped by pillows. This position minimizes the tension on the tissues and muscles and gives you a chance for more restful sleep.
